The group offers a friendly, safe space to share experiences and support each other. You can join us on your own or with the person you support. Cyrenians OPAL will be there to provide dementia friendly activity based support so you can enjoy a cuppa and a chat.

Training session - PDA: a misunderstood profile of autism
Training session for carers of autistic adults. Delivered by Sarah Barratt, an Educational Psychologist and carer of an autistic adult.
From the outside it looks like won't and feels like defiance, while from the inside it is experienced as can't, often activating a fight-flight, survival response. The threat is in demand, demands that are both self-imposed and required by others. How can one using a trauma informed parenting style, create a low demand life for the PDAer?

You will:
• Understand key principles of moving & handling and how to apply them at home
• Learn how injuries happen and how to prevent them
• Build confidence in safe everyday techniques (bed mobility, assisting with standing, short transfers)
• Try out small M&H equipment
• Get guidance from experienced McSence trainers
Please note: these sessions do not include hoist training or larger moving & handling equipment.

First Aid Course
Together with F.A.S.T we’re excited to offer the chance to take part in an Emergency First Aid course, where you’ll learn essential skills including CPR, treating bleeding and burns, managing choking, and much more. Everyone who completes the training will receive an HSE approved certificate.
The course is on 14th March and open to all adults registered with us. There is no cost to attend. Please note that a reasonable level of mobility is required, as you’ll need to take part in each practical element of the training.
If you’d like to join, please book to register your interest. Places will be confirmed on 6th March.

Cold Water Therapy & Swimming
We are delighted once again to be partnering with Jenny from The Cold Water Therapist to offer carers a cold water therapy & outdoor swimming small group introductory session.
This is an introduction to the basics and safety of cold water therapy and outdoor swimming.
Relax and absorb the experience and your surroundings as you are guided step-by-step into the water. Learn how to use your breathing productively and understand the many benefits and safety considerations of outdoor dipping and swimming in cold water.
The session is not about distance swimming, it is to enable you to safely and comfortably experience the therapeutic benefits of the cold.

When: Tuesday 19th May and Thursday 20th August, 10.00-11.30am (approx.)
Where: Avon Lagoon in Linlithgow (good mobility required to access the lagoon due to path and steps)

No equipment required. Just your swim clothes, old shoes, towel and warm clothing. Tow floats and gloves are provided.

Cold Water Therapy & Swimming (Copy)
We are delighted once again to be partnering with Jenny from The Cold Water Therapist to offer carers a cold water therapy & outdoor swimming small group introductory session.

Seated Tai Chi for Carers
Tai chi combines mindful movement, breathing techniques and simple, flowing exercises. All movements in this class are carried out seated, making it accessible to every body.
No experience is needed, and all exercises can be adapted to your comfort level. Just come as you are and enjoy some well‑deserved time out.
This is a block of 6 weekly sessions, starting 16 February and ending 30 March, with a break on 2 March.
We ask anyone signing up to commit to all 6 sessions as much as possible so the group can benefit fully from the programme.

Training session - declarative language: it’s not what you say but how you say it, that matters
Training session for carers of autistic adults. Delivered by Sarah Barratt, an Educational Psychologist and carer of an autistic adult.
A particular communication style that when used in a genuine way, invites participation, embraces an understanding that an individual will, if they can; while fundamentally avoiding power struggles and at worst relationship breakdown. It requires counter intuitiveness, perseverance and a willingness to practice.
