Why do we use the term ‘disabled person’?

We use the social model of disability, which was developed by disabled people, and describes people as being disabled by barriers in society, not by an impairment or difference.

The social model of disability helps us recognise barriers that make life harder for disabled people. These barriers are identified as being physical, organisational, attitudinal and communication. Removing these barriers creates equality and offers disabled people more independence, choice, and control.

Why might disabled people need support?

Disabled people can be impacted by many barriers, but that shouldn’t be the case. We often find that people do face challenges day-to-day, such as:

  • Accessibility

  • Social stigma and discrimination

  • Educational barriers

  • Lack of employment opportunities

  • Health Inequalities

  • Financial strains

  • Technology gaps

  • Access to transport

  • Impact on mental health

This is where we come in.

Access to quality information, advice and support helps to provide much needed support and reduce the negative impact these barriers can have on individuals.
