Busy time for our Young Carers
It’s been an incredible few months for our Young Carer Service, and we’re excited to share some wonderful updates! Our groups continue to thrive, bringing young carers together in safe and supportive spaces where they can connect, learn, and grow.
A particularly exciting milestone has been our work in primary schools. This term, we introduced eight new groups, each designed to help young carers navigate important topics such as relationships, worries, school life, caring responsibilities, and emotions. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with children feeling more confident and supported in their roles.
Alongside these important discussions, we’ve also made sure to bring plenty of fun and laughter into our social groups.
In West Lothian, young carers—some as young as eight years old—play a vital yet often unseen role in their families and communities, taking on responsibilities like helping with medication, managing household tasks, and providing emotional support to parents or siblings with disabilities, illness, or addiction. Despite their age, these young people show remarkable resilience and compassion, balancing school, friendships, and their caring roles with strength beyond their years. Their contributions are not only essential to the wellbeing of their loved ones but also to the fabric of our society, and they deserve recognition, support, and opportunities to thrive just like any other child.
Over the past few months at CoWL, young carers have enjoyed outdoor games, unleashed their creativity decorating biscuits, and even had the unforgettable experience of meeting some amazing police dogs. These moments of joy and relaxation are just as vital, offering young carers the chance to build friendships, unwind, create cherished memories and most importantly, enjoyed a break from caring.
None of this would be possible without the generous support of our funders. Their kindness and commitment allow us to reach more young carers, providing the resources and guidance they need to flourish. To them, we extend our heartfelt gratitude—your belief in our work makes a lasting difference in so many lives.
